Catherine Loder

This month we speak with Catherine Loder, Governance Officer, Wattle Range Council.

Catherine speaks about working for a rural council, the excitement being part of the winning team in the Rural Management Challenge last year - and how participating in the ELP (Emerging Leaders Program) helped her both on the day, and in the preparation for the event.

What's your current role, and what does in involve?
I am Council’s Governance Officer and work part-time. A current key project I am leading is the council elections. Other core elements that I work on include policies, delegations, authorisations, Freedom of Information, maintaining council’s website, obligations under the Local Government Act, repor
ting to council and council committees.

I also dabble in some side projects such as developing Council’s SharePoint site and helping to automate processes where possible.

Industry Trends - Urban development

Sponge Cities

Asian cities are struggling to accommodate rapid urban migration, and development is encroaching on flood-prone areas.

This is not a trend only in developing countries; floods in Houston, USA, highlighted the risks of development in environmentally sensitive and low-lying areas.

Adding to the problem,  sprawling urban development and use of impervious material prevent soil from absorbing rainwater, prompting further investment in infrastructures that typically impede natural processes and worsen flood impacts.

China’s 'sponge city initiative' aims to arrest this cycle through the use of permeable surfaces and green infrastructures.

Register today for the 2018 Rural Management Challenge

Date: Thursday 11 October 2018
Venue: Renmark Hotel

Is your Council up for the Challenge?

If so, it’s time to register and start selecting your team!

Register early and get a head start on the other teams! Hurry, we already have 5 teams registered!

We are very pleased to announce that this year’s Rural Management Challenge will be held in Renmark. This is a fantastic opportunity for rural councils to participate in a ‘Management Challenge’ that has been specifically tailored for their needs. It’s a unique opportunity for staff development and for rural councils to showcase their skills.

It’s also a great team building exercise and you only need four staff members from any level of council to participate. If you don’t have enough staff in your council, you also have the option of forming a composite team with neighbouring councils.

The Rural Management Challenge is designed to stretch team members’ comfort zones and expand their skill sets. Teams that perform well, come to the day ready to let go of their fears and embrace the unexpected.
