A word from the CEO

To me, the end of the financial year feels a bit like New Year’s Eve – a time to reflect on the successes and experiences of the year ending as well as to set goals for the coming year. 

Many of these goals tend to be financial, but it is also valuable to consider investing in yourself. 

What will you do in 2018/19 to become better? Will you make time to think, to learn, to exercise, to slow down, to speed up, to network more, to improve your focus, to improve a skill?

Just as taking a break or going on a holiday is important, so too is investing in ourselves in order to ensure that we can give more to others, our roles and our communities.

Gordon Thomson

This month we speak with Gordon Thomson, Director, Corporate & Community Services at the District Council of Loxton Waikerie.

Gordon explains his approach to 'investing in self' and also discusses the importance of ensuring that staff, especially in regional areas, maintain access to ongoing learning and development.

What’s your current role, and what does it involve?
I am currently Director Corporate and Community Services with the District Council of Loxton Waikerie and have been in this role for almost 12 months.  The role includes responsibilities for the corporate side of Council’s business; the full range of community services activities and regulatory services including planning and building functions.   

You've had a diverse career - can you share some of your background?  Coming from those roles, what attracted you to local government and your current role?
I have worked in a range of public sector agencies over the years from a long stint in State Parliament as Clerk Assistant in the House of Assembly, to roles in what was previously DFEEST and Treasury and Finance.

It’s fair to say the decision to move to local government is based on wanting to work more closely with my local community to make a positive difference.

Industry Trends - Does your Council have a strong staff development policy, and are you promoting it?

Organisations are becoming more aware that a positive (and well-promoted) staff development policy, including ensuing development plans and actions are reviewed in line with staff reviews, is a necessary part of rewarding, attracting and retaining staff.

The most recent Seek ‘laws of attraction’ survey found that staff development is a very strong attractor, especially for Millennials.

Almost every form of career development was significantly more likely to be a ‘must have’ for Millennials than other generations as they looked for ways to propel their career forward.

Almost half (47 per cent) considered opportunities for promotion a must when considering an employer, while 44 per cent said the same for on the job skill development.

The next forum will be held on Monday 10 September and will focus on holding inclusive events. Further details will be available soon.

HR Network
The HR Network recently held a forum on Friday 1 June on ‘Managing mental health in the workplace’, led by Richard LeQuesne from JobFit Consulting.

The group worked through a case study and a range of issues that may arise when managing a return to work process where an employee is suffering from mental health issues. It was a great opportunity for the network to discuss such a hot topic and understand how best to manage these situations.

Save the Date! HR Conference
We are pleased to announce that the HR Network will be holding their first ever conference on Wednesday 19 September at the Adelaide Convention Centre.
Further details on the program and registrations will be available in the coming weeks.

General Managers Network
The network recently visited the former Royal Adelaide Hospital site, for a tour led by Rachel Walsh from Renewal SA where they discussed opportunities to be innovative and the importance of partnerships and stakeholder relationships.

It was a fantastic opportunity for our General Managers to connect with their peers and do some networking.

The next forum will be held on Wednesday 26 September and will include a facilitated discussion with Maggie Dowling from Bedford.

We are very pleased to announce that this year’s Rural Management Challenge will be held in Renmark. This is a fantastic opportunity for rural councils to participate in a ‘Management Challenge’ that has been specifically tailored for their needs. It’s a unique opportunity for staff development and for rural councils to showcase their skills.

It’s also a great team building exercise and you only need four staff members from any level of council to participate. If you don’t have enough staff in your council, you also have the option of forming a composite team with neighbouring councils.

The Rural Management Challenge is designed to stretch team members’ comfort zones and expand their skill sets. Teams that perform well, come to the day ready to let go of their fears and embrace the unexpected.

Tips and ideas - Invest in yourself

What’s the definition of an investment?
In this context, to invest is to put money, effort, time, etc. into something to make a profit or gain an advantage (expectation of an advantage or greater return in the future).

A stitch in time saves nine” is a well-known saying that suggests investing a little time today can save lots of time in the future.

So, to invest in oneself is to put effort in today, on a personal level, that will return more tomorrow, in terms of, for example:
•    Work or life skills
•    Relationships/networks
•    Learning experiences
•    Health/Wellbeing
•    Lifestyle

Executive Leaders Program 2018 – Registrations close 20 July 2018

The Executive Leaders Program is for local government executives who are seeking to expand their minds to new ways of thinking and amplify their leadership impact.

The program has been designed to:
•    Enhance complex and adaptive thinking capabilities
•    Increase capabilities to generate solutions to complex adaptive problems
•    Challenge assumptions and perspectives
•    Equip executive leaders to navigate rapidly changing and evolving environments.

Recent Events

Economic Development Forum 2018 ‘The Sky’s the Limit’ 

On Wednesday 20 June 2018, 80 delegates from 36 councils gathered at the Adelaide Convention Centre to celebrate, share and learn about our councils’ economic development success stories.

Highlights included Rodney Harrex of SATC sharing the critical role data plays in the success of his organisation, hearing about the ARC Campbelltown with 67,250 monthly visits and the success of their Learn to Swim Program,  the impressively low vacancy rate on Prospect Road, the extensive collaborative networks of the RDA and the success of Salisbury in attracting large business including advanced manufacturing companies to the area. 

Further, Matt Grant ‘s valuable insights into how City of Adelaide are unlocking Economic Growth led to a great discussion on how this could also impact on the regions.

Overall, the spirit of sharing and pride in what we are doing for our communities was palpable.  Special thanks to Sean Keenihan and Norman Waterhouse Lawyers and Simon Millcock of Economic Development Australia (SA Division) for their support and collaboration on this event.
