Six Sigma is a data driven quality improvement philosophy that emphasises defect prevention over defect detection. Six Sigma drives customer satisfaction and bottom line improvement by reducing variation and eliminating waste through structured problem solving (the Define-Measure-Analyse-Improve-Control – DMAIC – framework) and the application of data-driven management and statistical analysis. The methodology is generally used for more complex improvement areas within organisations, where competing outcomes and a range of cost and quality drivers make structured analysis critical in determining optimal long-term solutions.
