A word from the CEO

In this festive edition of Leaders Connect we interview a very special new member and find out what our Board wants for Christmas- for themselves, their councils and the LGMA.

Among the busy-ness of the silly season, I hope you take time to reflect on all of the achievements of 2012 and make the time to nominate for the 2013 Leadership Excellence Awards.  Celebrating hard work, innovation and success is so important and this is what our Awards program aims to do.

I would like to wish a very happy festive season to all our members, corporate partners, sponsors and all local government professionals. I look forward to spending time with all of you in 2013 at our many events and network sessions and hope you are able to re charge your batteries over the break and come back rested and enthusiastic!

Member profile - Santa Claus


This month we speak with the Santa Claus, CEO of the North Pole Regional Council. 

Hi Santa - thanks for talking to us at this busy time of the year.

What’s your current role, and how long have you been in that role?

Well, I’m Santa Claus, also known as Father Christmas, St Nicholas or even Kris Kringle, although I’m not so happy about that last one, makes me sound like a rapper.  My role is CEO of the North Pole Regional Council, and my main responsibility is project managing the preparation and delivery of all the presents to children around the world on Christmas eve.

I’ve been doing this job for so long I can’t remember when I started.  Some people reckon I started soon after some guy called “Good King Wenceslas” but I find that hard to believe.  Who would give a guy a job with that name?  I mean, was his first name actually “Good”? But I digress…

We are delighted to announce the launch of our Leadership Awards Program for 2013.  This program has been running now for over 8 years and is designed to recognize outstanding achievement and innovation within local government.
Council staff work very hard in our communities throughout the year and we know that during that time you deliver some amazing services and new initiatives.  These are the programs that we would like to hear about from you.  If you haven’t nominated for an award in previous years we strongly encourage you to do so.  The awards are an excellent way to recognize your achievements and to share and celebrate them with other councils.

The Awards and criteria for nominating are outlined brochure (see link above) and we are pleased to announce we have introduced a new award for 2013: the Age Smart Award for Leadership Excellence in Age-friendly Communities.

The overall aim of the LGMA (SA) Leadership Excellence Awards is to:
•    Raise the standard and quality of local government leadership and management across local government in South Australia
•    Create public awareness of the level of expertise and excellence in local government
•    Recognise excellence demonstrated by LGMA (SA) members and individuals employed by local government thereby rewarding their efforts.

The Awards will be presented at what has become the night of nights for local government the 2013 Gala Awards Dinner which will be held on Friday 19 April 2013 at the Adelaide Convention Centre.

Upcoming training


1. 2013 Professional Leaders Program (PLP) 

We are excited to announce the launch of our new program: the Professional Leaders Program.  This program will be co-delivered by the University of Adelaide’s Executive Education Unit and is the next step from the Emerging Leaders Program or for the manager wanting to move forward in their leadership career.

On completion of both programs, 2 of the 12 credits needed to earn an MBA will be granted.  To earn a Graduate Certificate, only 2 more credits are required and to earn a Graduate Diploma 6 more are required.

The PLP has been designed to both complement and build on the skills developed through the LGMA (SA) Emerging Leaders Program.

The Emerging Leaders Program primarily focuses on building the interpersonal and people skills required by Managers whilst the purpose of the PLP is to develop analytical capabilities.  Capabilities in areas such as: legislative context, finance, operations and strategy.
