A word from the CEO

The theme of this month’s newsletter is to ‘Get involved.’ 

There are so many opportunities to be an active member of your Association, from our unique professional development programs and member networks, to being a Management Challenge mentor or nominating for a Board position. 

LG Professionals, SA truly belongs to you—the people who work in the sector.  We are not a subsidiary of local government, nor are we a branch of the LGA.  We are a not-for-profit member Association and you as individuals are our members. 

We strive to offer you support across your entire career in local government, and to that end we have just grown your team.

Short Programs
Our range of Short Programs are an effective, efficient and affordable way to develop new skills to enhance your local government career. Take a moment to review our Professional Development Program to learn more about how we can support your career growth.

Our next Short Program, ‘Leading More Effective Stakeholder Engagement, will be held on Thursday 18 October. Using relevant case studies and scenarios, we’ll delve into the principles, strategies and behaviours needed to identify, manage, meet and exceed stakeholder expectations in a way that is beneficial for your organisation—vital skills for officers and leaders at all levels at any stage of their career. Strategic Management Program
We’ve made some exciting changes to our Professional Leaders Program, which will now be known as the Strategic Management Program. More than just a name change, we’ve made this program more accessible by reducing the span from five months to three months, requiring just three trips to Adelaide which will be aligned with weekends to make travel easier.

Developed in partnership with UniSA and with the sector in mind, the Strategic Management Program has been designed to build upon the skills and capabilities developed in the Emerging Leaders Program. You’ll build high-level leadership and management skills within a local government context, learning technical skills to manage business functions and enhance innovation, strategic thinking, business acumen and operational excellence.

Topics covered as part of this program:

  • Risk management
  • Thinking strategically
  • Financial management
  • Operational excellence (Lean Six Sigma)

Further, completion of the Strategic Management Program can be used as credit towards an MBA at UniSA, which has been ranked in the top 10 MBA programs nationally for ten years.

Deb Richardson

This month we speak with Deb Richardson, Director, Community Development at the City of Port Adelaide Enfield.

Deb speaks to us about her role, her advice for aspiring leaders, what motivates her - and why she values "getting involved".

What's your current role - and what does it involve?

I’m the Director Community Development at City of Port Adelaide Enfield.  I get to lead a great group of people to work with our community so PAE can be a place people can experience high wellbeing, have opportunity and generally be somewhere they love to be.

It’s easy (and at times relevant) to describe our work as functions such as Libraries, Development Services, etc and it’s also important to not lose sight of what they all add up to, the things we’re all really here for.


Where were you before? (what‘s your career background to date?)

Where haven't I been?  I've been doing a career tour of Local Government.  Prior to PAE I was at Adelaide Hills Council as Director Assets and Engineering, which was a step out of community development and recreation where I have spent most of my working life.

Industry Trends - Staff Retention through Professional Development

An employer who doesn’t focus on learning is going to lose out — in performance, engagement and retention.

According to LinkedIn’s 2018 Workforce Learning Report, a whopping 93% of employees would stay at a company longer if it invested in their careers.

Development is no longer an optional perk or reserved for only certain positions. It’s expected by today’s talent.

It signals that the employer values their people and are actively interested in their success — not just on the job, but over the long haul.

HR Network reflection
Anne Pett, Chair of the HR Network

The SA Local Government HR Network, in partnership with LG Professionals, SA, hosted its first ever HR Conference on Wednesday 19 September at the Adelaide Convention Centre.

The conference (Workforce 4.0: Are you future ready?) was well attended with a stellar line up of speakers who engaged participants to discuss a range of workforce planning challenges and strategies to meet our ever changing workforce landscape.
 
Key topics included technology and how workforces need to adapt quickly to emerging technology and capitalise how this technology can be applied in the workplace such as virtual reality; workplace accommodation – activity based work; paperless environments; organisation structures – agile instead of hierarchical.

The day finished with a wonderful presentation that focused on our own wellbeing with some great strategies to make sure we look after ourselves so that we can continue to help others.

Tips and ideas - Getting the most from your membership

Don’t stand on the sidelines!  Get involved!

There are only three types of people – those that hope things will happen, those that makes things happen, and those that wonder what happened!

So, in life – family, career, hobbies, sport – you can either hang back and watch what’s going on, or get involved and be a part of the action. 

Studies show that much greater satisfaction is gained by getting involved.  Parents are advised to get involved with their children’s development and activities.  Community members are encouraged to get involved with community issues and have a say in making decisions that will affect them.

And of course, workers are advised to get involved with activities that can increase job satisfaction and help to further their career.

LG Professionals, SA offers a range of opportunities to get involved and get the best value from your membership  - from our professional development programs to a wide range of focused networks that meet regularly to learn and engage, and also mentoring and coaching.

Recent Events

Leading with Emotional Intelligence masterclass
We recently facilitated an emotional intelligence masterclass with Barry Bales, an internationally-renowned leadership expert, exclusively for our members and Leaders Alumni. Participants left having learned how to use emotions intelligently to help guide behaviour and thinking in ways that enhance results.

Here’s some of the feedback we received:

Influencing for Positive Outcomes
The first of our Short Programs from our recently released Professional Development Program July to December 2018 was held on 7 September. This one-day program helped participants learn about how others make decisions and process information, and how they can use their own influencing style to influence outcomes—a great, practical program to kick off our Professional Development Program.
