A word from the CEO

For those of you who don’t know, we share premises with a few other organisations and recently in the kitchen, one of our office friends asked me if it was our busy time as she had noticed we were out and about a lot. My response was ‘It’s always busy here at LG Professionals, SA; we just keep growing and offering more and more’. So my message to you this month, and the theme of our newsletter, is ‘seize the day’ and take advantage of all we have to offer.

Don’t be ‘too busy’; you deserve to take time out to develop yourself and form networks – this will ultimately save you time as you work smarter not harder and form connections who can support you and share with you.

This month I commend and congratulate all who got involved, from our Executive Leaders Program participants who recently concluded their program, the Coober Pedy Rural Challenge team who drove a whopping 9.5 hours to Renmark to participate in the Rural Management Challenge, and to our Ignite and short program participants. Well done to all. I’m sure you will go back to the office feeling refreshed and inspired and better able to serve your communities. And thank you to all the Executives who support your people to be even better and to learn with us.

Rural Management Challenge 2018

Congratulations to Port Pirie Regional Council!



On Thursday 11 October at the Renmark Hotel five rural teams competed in this year’s Rural Management Challenge. What a day! Teams demonstrated exceptional team work, tackling tasks as they came with energy and humour. Many stepped well out of their comfort zones and excelled - well done to all!

It was a tough race, but Port Pirie Regional Council came out on top, followed by Mid Murray Council. A big thank you to all teams and supporters for a fantastic day. We look forward to seeing Peter Arnold, Matthew Cooper, Lee Kirchner, Glenn Miller and mentor Grant McKenzie at our Leadership Excellence Gala Awards Dinner on 17 May 2019 to officially present them with their winner’s trophy!

We would like to thank our wonderful facilitation team - without them the day wouldn’t have been possible!

Timothy Tol

This month we speak with Timothy Tol, who has just commenced the role of Director of Infrastructure and Environmental Services at Renmark Paringa Council.

Timothy speaks to us about his passion for working in local government, his career path and his views on professional development.

You’ve worked in Local Government for a while now. What is your current role and what does it involve?
Yes, I have been in Local Government for a while—almost 19 years now. I've just started at the Renmark Paringa Council on Monday 29 October as the Director of Infrastructure and Environmental Services. This role involves providing leadership to these two portfolios, and I am looking forward to it.

What attracted you to the sector and what keeps you motivated?
Actually when I was studying at university the last place I thought I’d be working was Local Government. I had that negative stereotypical view of Councils back then. However, it was at the end of 1999 when I landed an opportunity to do some work experience as a planner at the City of Victor Harbor through Donna Ferretti, who was a lecturer at UniSA at the time. General Managers Network Forum – Exploring Bedford Industries
It was great to see some of you at the GM Network forum on 26 September at Bedford Industries. For those that couldn't make it, the group was taken on a tour of the Panorama site, led by Samantha Hellams, previously General Manager City Services at the City of Playford. Samantha shared some insights on:
  • The challenges around the NDIS
  • The flow on effects that councils need to be aware of and consider (e.g. to council services and infrastructure)
  • How Bedford are adapting to continue to provide the best service for their clients/employees.
One of Bedford’s main focuses is collaboration, and they are very keen to stay engaged and work with Local Government. This was the final forum of the ‘Innovation and Change’ series for 2018. Throughout the year we explored the Tonsley Innovation Precinct, the former RAH and lastly Bedford Industries.

We are in the process of planning next year’s calendar and themes, with the assistance of a small working group, so watch this space for the next GM network forum!

Continuous Improvement Network Forum – Embedding a Community Outcomes Culture Through Analytics
The network held their fourth and final forum of 2018 on 17 October. The forum was hosted by the City of Playford and included presentations from Shikha Sharma, Manager Analytics and Information Solutions and Anika Semmler. The forum gave us insights into the Playford Analytics Centre, and how this team of continuous improvement professionals are supporting and empowering the organisation to make a difference by leveraging their current skill sets and always bringing the focus back to the community’s needs.

We are nearly at the one year mark of LG professionals,SA supporting this network, and what a year it has been. The network forums have continued to grow in numbers, and it has been great to see the enthusiasm and support that CI professionals share with each other. Here’s to another year of supporting this passionate group of individuals!

Executive Leaders Program
Our 2018 Executive Leaders Program recently wrapped up, marking a very successful first year for our newest leadership program. Spanning two intensive three-day blocks over three months, participants challenged assumptions and perspectives, developed complex and adaptive thinking capabilities, and equipped themselves to navigate rapidly changing environments with a solutions-focused approach.

Here’s what some of this years’ participants had to say:
  • ‘I needed this course, its content and its motivation—my thinking needed changing.’
  • ‘Thank you so much. Loved this program!’
