Whether you’re leading infrastructure upgrades, delivering community programs or improving internal processes, strong project management skills are essential. And as local government professionals, we should be leading the way.

This course will explore project leadership and you will learn how to manage some of the challenges faced when managing big projects in a local government context.

Our Advanced Project Management course is designed for those ready to move beyond the basics. Perfect for anyone with experience managing projects, or who has completed our Introduction to Project Management. This course digs deeper into project management theory and looks at both operational and strategic elements of project management.

Best suited to those who have some project management experience behind them, and/or those who have completed our Introduction to Project Management course.

Ageing well looks different across every level of community life. Rachel’s discussion will focus on 'The Plug-in' which is designed to deliver end-to-end research and provides actionable insights for clients to meet their needs. Incorporating Plain English principles into your work will result in less writing time, shorter documents and enhanced readability.

Even if your role doesn’t require a lot of writing, how you come across is crucial to your credibility. The ability to write clearly, precisely, powerfully and persuasively is a key skill that enables you to summarise and present ideas, build relationships and gain commitment to action. Circular Economy (27 Oct 2026)

Managing bulky household waste remains a significant challenge for councils seeking to reduce landfill, prevent illegal dumping and minimise the impact on local communities. All councils would benefit from an increased resource recovery, enabling better environmental and community outcomes without placing further pressure on waste budgets. This Global Insight Online Forum will explore how two councils are addressing bulky waste, showcasing community- driven solutions tailored to the needs of their residents.

Participants will gain insights into these successful programs and partnerships, helping delegates consider practical pathways their own council can adopt to support a more circular approach to managing bulking waste items

Alachua County, Florida
As home to the University of Florida, the city experiences a surge in unwanted furniture and household goods at the end of each semester, as significant student turnover results in items being left at the curb side. Like many councils, Alachua County has a zero waste policy in line with their climate action plan and determined they should partner with external organisation to address their bulky waste issue. By providing a grant, Alachua County has been able to partner with the Repurpose Project, and create furniture donation programs and convenient bulky waste collection services, transforming a seasonal waste challenge into a community resource opportunity, before items reach landfill.

Inner West Council
Following amalgamation, Inner West Council envisioned creating a community "reuse and recycling" centre through partnerships with reuse organisations and charities – a one-stop-shop for community sustainability. This curated space offers residents sustainability resources, services, and workshops and reflects the result of how the council stepped up to challenge new ways to manage bulky and hard to recycle items. More than a sustainability initiative, it creates community connections, keeps valuable resources in circulation, and generates new income opportunities. In this session, hear how Inner West Council is turning waste challenges into community value.

What role will you play in the future of local government?

With a complex and continuously evolving sector, it is now more essential than ever that local government is prepared for the future. New services, new skills, local and global impacts and the ever-changing digital landscape have fundamentally changed expectations of both the nature and delivery of services.

On completion of this program, participants will be able to:

Make progress on complex problems in an agile way
Navigate rapidly changing and evolving environments
Collaborate and work more effectively with different stakeholder groups
Make better decisions in uncertain, complex and ambiguous situations
Manage their energy to best serve their communities
See and consider multiple perspectives

Apply strengths in addressing challenges, improving leadership effectiveness and driving team performance.
