2023 AUSTRALASIAN MANAGEMENT CHALLENGE

The Australasian Management Challenge has been at the forefront of professional development in local government in Australia and New Zealand for more than 25 years. The Management Challenge is a simulation-based team building, learning and networking program using real local government themes - the types of issues that a senior management team in a council would most likely face.

Teams are challenged to respond to a series of tasks in a unique, fast paced, "pressure cooker" environment. Some tasks will require written responses (such as a council report or recommendation document), some will take the form of role plays or presentations and the teams are also scored on observations of how well they display energy, synergy, effectiveness and creative thinking.

The Management Challenge provides an excellent professional development opportunity to become more effective in leading, thinking, communicating, negotiating, decision-making, analysing and engaging.

Registrations opening soon.

2022 ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CONFERENCE

On Friday 25 November 2022 we hosted 60 local government professionals, representing 20 regional and 8 metro councils, at our 2022 Economic Development Conference ‘Future Prosperity: Planting the Seeds for a New Future’.

Our line-up of speakers, including Con Michalakis from Hostplus, Ryan James from .id, and Jacqueline Brinkman from Economic Development Australia, presented on the current economic context and the significant challenges ahead as we enter the post-covid economic situation, make plans to reach net-zero in our state and lead the way in pursuing greater economic prosperity through connections with local business and communities.

The day rounded out with a networking hour held in conjunction with the Norman Waterhouse Lawyers Local Government Conference, which saw connections established and deepened within the sector.

Thank you to our Principal Event Partner Norman Waterhouse Lawyers and our Event Supporter Economic Development Australia (SA) for their support of this important event, and contributions to the topical and thought-provoking program.

We look forward to seeing all local government professionals with an interest in, or responsibility for, economic development at this conference again next year.

Morgan Potter

This month we caught up with Morgan Potter, Manager Corporate Services at Port Pirie Regional Council about her role, being elected to the
LG Professionals SA Board and what she enjoys doing outside of work.

What is your role and what does it involve?

I ask myself this question often! In principle, I’m the Manager Corporate Services at Port Pirie Regional Council. This incorporates Finance, Rates, Customer Service, People & Culture, Governance and most recently Records Management. However, it’s forever evolving, and many new things continuously pop up so I’m yet to determine what a ‘business as usual’ workday entails. Read more...

We caught up with some of our Women's Network Committee Members who shared their reflections on the recent Women's Network Conference 'Unlock YOU' held on Friday 4 November at SkyCity Adelaide. Read what they had to say below:

“What an amazing conference we had this year. Great team effort by the Women’s Network Committee. Each year the bar goes up, which is fantastic!

For me the conference Unlock YOU was about focussing on self and reflection. What I loved about the day was being able to connect with other passionate and amazing women from varying backgrounds and roles from metro and regional councils across SA.

The theme resonated with me personally and I loved all speakers during the day. The panel discussion was very insightful and inspirational. A special shout out to Dr Hannah Brown who outdid herself.

I’m looking forward to supporting the preparation and planning of the 2023 Women’s Network forums and conference. I find my involvement with the Women’s Network Committee very rewarding and am privileged to be working alongside some amazing women.”

Ritu Datta
Manager Organisational Development
City of Mount Gambier

“It was great to see so many women come together, representing Council’s from all over the state at the conference. I loved hearing from the panel members with their open and honest reflections and conversation. I was also able to have the majority of the women from my workplace attend with me and we are all looking forward to next year’s conference.”

Katrina Fromm

Deputy CEO
District Council of Karoonda East Murray

“The Women’s Network Conference Unlock YOU was a chance to step out of the day to day and focus on yourself. I really enjoyed Felicity Furey providing inspiration to back yourself, the Local Government Leaders Panel providing their career stories and the pathways they took to get where they are today and Dr Hannah Brown, a funny and engaging presentation to finish off the day. The opportunities to network throughout the day allowed me to connect with women that I had not seen for some time and meet some new faces within the network.”

Danni Biar
Senior Development Officer - Planning
City of Playford

"Unlock YOU was a fantastic day with over 260 participants. It's so heart-warming to see so many women in local government enjoying these events put on by the awesome team at
LG Professionals SA. Having been on the committee as the only outdoor worker for 3 years I was particularly happy to see a whole table of outdoor women from City of Port Adelaide Enfield. Dr Hannah Brown was the absolute highlight of the day with her entertaining approach to science. It was a great day all round."

We recently caught up with Jess Davis, Community and Economic Development Officer at District Council of Streaky Bay to find out how she's enjoying the Emerging Leaders Program.

What made you sign up for the Emerging Leaders Program (ELP)?

I first heard about the Emerging Leaders Program through my Manager (Penny Williams – General Manager Prosperity) at Council, Penny had recently participated in the LG Professionals SA, Strategic Management Program and Executive Leaders Program and had not stopped raving about them. We discussed the Emerging Leaders Program and believed it would be a good fit for moving forward in developing my leadership and management skills and career progression at District Council of Streaky Bay. Recently Council has undertaken a re-structure in which my current position becomes one of supervision and leadership, and to gain confidence in my ability to be a positive and knowledgeable leader and decision maker I believed this program would be a great experience. I was excited to participate in a program that would take me out of my comfort zone and provide me with an opportunity to build on my confidence and further develop my leadership skills, which this program has certainly done.

The most recent module focused on sustainability – what were some of your takeaways from this module?

The Module 7 Group did a great job, and I found the module very interesting, the CAWRA Materials Recovery Facility project was very impressive. Currently our Council is very focused on tree revegetation so hearing Tim from Tree Net speak was very insightful.

What are you most looking forward to as the program progresses?

Not waiting for as many delayed flights!

Only one more session together to go, at this point I am eager to finalise the group project and get together to see what the other groups present. I am looking forward to celebrating the hard work that every participant has contributed and hope to further develop the connections that we have made over the last few months. The networking opportunities within this program have been fantastic.

What advice would you give to someone considering undertaking the Emerging Leaders Program?

DO IT. It has been challenging and takes you out of your comfort zone, but it provides valuable insights into leadership styles and some surprising information about yourself as an individual and team member. I encourage anyone thinking about it to take the leap and register, the leadership skills and relationships you build with others on the journey with you are fantastic.

The 2023 Emerging Leaders Program will be launching this week. Keep an eye on your inbox as registrations will fill fast.
