A word from the Acting CEO

Happy end of October! I hope this month’s edition of Leaders Connect finds you happy and well.

One of the many benefits of LG Professionals SA membership is the opportunity to raise your profile. Whilst putting yourself forward for new opportunities can sometimes be scary, it can also be amazing!

I encourage you to put yourself forward for one (or more) of the many opportunities currently available to LG Professionals SA Members:

  • Register for our Women’s Network Conference – to be held on Friday 5 November – registrations closing soon
  • Register for our Economic Development Conference – to be held on Friday 12 November 2021 – an important event not to be missed
  • Vote for your new LG Professionals SA Board. Ballot information has been emailed to all Members - if you haven’t received please let us know
  • Register to attend our AGM – to be held on Thursday 11 November 2021
  • Nominate to represent LG Professionals SA on a Network Committee – see details below on current opportunities with our People and Culture and Women’s Networks
  • Apply to join our team! We are currently recruiting for a Network and Program Officer and Administration and Training Support Officer – find more information here 
  • Register for one of our many Leadership Programs – Ignite, Strategic Management Program or Executive Leaders Program

There are lots of exciting things happening at LG Professionals SA – I encourage you to get involved. Of course, if you have any questions at all about any of the above please don’t hesitate to reach out.

The LG Professionals SA Annual Women’s Network Conference is an event for local government women at all levels, both indoor and outdoor workforce. The program is designed to build confidence, inspire you with stories of success and resilience and connect you with yourself and your peers, to support your personal and professional development.

This years theme ‘Grow and Thrive’ will support attendees to reflect on the past year, make sense of it and identify the growth opportunities to reset and take forward to the future, pushing through adversity and being brave with the unknown.

RURAL MANAGEMENT CHALLENGE DINNER

The Rural Management Challenge will be held on Thursday 18 November 2021 in the Adelaide CBD, with the winner announced at a dinner that evening.

The dinner is open for registrations to all local government professionals - if you are not participating in the Rural Challenge but would like to demonstrate your support of the event and the participating regional councils, please register to attend - we would love to see you there!

JOIN OUR WOMEN'S NETWORK COMMITTEE

The LG Professionals SA Women’s Network aims to maintain and improve the role of women employed in local government, to celebrate their contributions, and identify and provide opportunities to network and/or access development and training.

If you have a keen interest in creating opportunities for female local government professionals to thrive, then please consider this excellent opportunity to get involved.

The Women’s Network Committee wish to invite nominations for:

  • 5 positions for terms commencing December 2021 and concluding December 2023
  • 2 positions for terms commencing December 2021 and concluding December 2022

We encourage all women in the sector to consider this opportunity, from both the indoor and outdoor workforce.

JOIN OUR PEOPLE AND CULTURE NETWORK COMMITTEE

The People and Culture Network aims to create opportunities for local government people and culture professionals to connect, collaborate, influence and grow.

The People and Culture Network Committee meet a minimum of 4 but up to 8 times a year, and hold network catch ups every 6 to 8 weeks to discuss topical issues, provide the opportunity to ask questions arising within the network and to encourage and facilitate peer support. These meetings are held via Zoom with the option to attend face to face. During these meetings, the Network Committee progress the Network’s priority areas, focussing on the aims of the network described above. We encourage you to get involved!

The People and Culture Network Committee wish to invite nominations for:

What is your role and what does it entail?

I recently commenced a 2 year secondment with the City of Mount Gambier in the position of Manager Organisational DevelopmentThe position has a diverse portfolio. We caught up with one of this year's Emerging Leaders cohort, Craig Mudge, Manager Corporate Services at District Council of Mount Remarkable to find out how he's finding the program so far.

What made you sign up for the Emerging Leaders Program?

I had been interested in the Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) for a couple of years, however it wasn’t until I was appointed to my current role that I took a proper look at the program. The opportunity to build on my confidence and further develop my leadership skills in a program tailored for the Local Government sector was one that I just couldn’t pass up.

I did have some reservations, in particular the time and travel commitment, but the feedback and encouragement I received from others from regional Councils who had participated made it a no brainer.

A huge shout out to my CEO and my amazing team for their support in me taking on this opportunity!


The most recent module focused on leading through change – what were some of your takeaways from this module?

The leading through change topic facilitated by Dr Marguerite Kolar focussed on change leadership, change management, the impact of change on people and their reactions, and how leaders can help all during periods of change.


We were given insights and aids into skills of change leaders, including how to take everyone on the journey and how to be enthusiastic, genuine and sincere about circumstances surrounding change.

My main takeaway was the importance of active listening, always keeping the communication lines open and persevere.

What are you most looking forward to as the program progresses?

We’re getting towards the end of the ELP now, so I’m keen to work with my group on finalising our group project, as well as taking in the final modules on sustainability and integration.

On a side note – our Council has entered the Rural Management Challenge for the first time, and I will be the Team Mentor. I am looking forward to supporting the team as they navigate the challenge in November. Go Team Remarkable!


 

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CONFERENCE 
Friday 12 November 2021 - Adelaide Convention Centre  

Looking forward, Australia will be different. Demographics will change – Australia’s ageing population the biggest factor.  Inter-generational burdens will shift. Economies will change – as will communities. Long term challenges but also long-term opportunities. Local Government’s role will emerge and necessarily evolve – different Councils will require different capability and capacity.

This is an important conference not to be missed. Registrations are open with the full program to be released soon.
