A WORD FROM THE CEO

I can’t believe it's the end of February already – the month when we all start to feel more in the swing of things, we enjoy the ups and downs of this summer weather, and communities around our state brighten up with festival fun – it's a wonderful time to be in South Australia.

February kicked off our development calendar for the year with the commencement of most of our 2025 Leadership Programs, including Ignite, Strategic Management Program, Executive Leaders Program, and the Women’s Career Catalyst Program. We’re so grateful and excited to foster connections with Members whom we’ll be spending time with as they learn and grow in their respective programs.

February 2025
Edition 161

We have received all of your Leadership Excellence Awards nominations and are currently undertaking the shortlisting process. Keep your eyes peeled for finalists in the coming weeks. Thank you to everyone who submitted a nomination, once again we’re seeing the boundless innovation and excellence that’s consistently being led by local government professionals. Taking the time to recognise our achievements is so important as not only does it offer an important opportunity for reflection but also assists other councils and subsidiaries through the sharing of learnings. Don’t forget to register for the Annual Gala Dinner where we will celebrate these incredible achievements of our sector.

If you’re wondering what’s next for you in your development journey, I encourage you to check out the program for our Annual State Conference as it’s coming around quickly. This event is widely regarded as one of the most informative conferences, with information relevant to many areas and levels in local government. We’d love for you to join us - register for your place below.

We offer a variety of short courses year-round, and our current offerings can assist you to grow and develop in whichever areas you’re seeking to pursue. If you’ve never taken a short course with us before; it’s a day out of the office for fast-tracked learning. Speak to your manager if you’re interested in attending to expand your skill set.

Finally, I seek your help! LG Professionals SA is currently drafting a new Strategic Plan that will guide our organisation over the next 3 to 5 years and we’ve put the call out for you to have your say. Our Shape Our Future Workshops are to listen to your thoughts on
LG Professionals SA and to chat through your future needs as someone who works in local government. Please see below for more details and to register to join us in person or online if you're based regionally.

I look forward to seeing you very soon (hopefully at our upcoming Shape Our Future Workshop if you're in Adelaide next week!).

Best wishes,

Rhiannon

We caught up with one of last year's Emerging Leaders Program participants, Alisha Peeters, Marketing Executive, Adelaide Central Market Authority, to find out how she enjoyed the program.

What made you sign up for the Emerging Leaders Program?
I was motivated to sign up for the Emerging Leaders Program after my wonderful mentor at the time highly recommended the program, herself being a past graduate. I wanted to develop my leadership skills in a practical way, and I felt that this program would challenge me, push me to think differently but also provide me with the tools to use in my everyday work.

What was your biggest takeaway from the program?
One of my biggest takeaways was gaining a deeper understanding of personal leadership and how to apply leadership skills. The program also broadened my understanding of local government, and I learned how to work more effectively with a range of different work styles and preferences.

What advice would you give to someone considering doing the Emerging Leaders Program?
I’d say go for it! It’s a fantastic opportunity for your personal and professional growth; to learn from experienced leaders, take on challenges that will help you grow, and step out of your comfort zone. It’s also a great opportunity to meet some wonderful people from other councils.
