BUSINESS PERFORMANCE AND IMPROVEMENT NETWORK FORUM 'THINKING DIFFERENTLY' RECAP
|
|
|
Last month the Business Performance and Improvement Network held their second forum since relaunching at the start of 2023, hosted by City of Unley.
Attendees in person and online had an opportunity to hear from keynote speakers Katrina Lazaroff, CEO and Artistic Director of The Mill and Damian Carter, CEO of District Council of Streaky Bay.
Katrina provided insights into her role at The Mill and how she balances the creative and innovative thinking styles of their clients, with the need to also provide more management and administrative oversight – and the challenges that come with combining these two styles of thinking. It was great to hear her speak to the transformative work being done and how they focus on connection, creativity, innovation and being contemporary.
Damian shared insights from a recent trip to Japan where he visited the City of Kitakyushu. He specifically focussed on how the City of Kitakyushu transitioned in the past 50 years from an industrial metropolis to a green and sustainable City.
|
|
Key learnings shared included encouraging citizen driven initiatives, data driven decision making, transparent reporting, and the use of the United Nation Sustainable Development Goals.
The hot topic conversation was an energetic group discussion where we explored the topics of collaboration, strategy and policy, the political nature of our environment, how transparency can limit creativity and innovation, being bold, honest and authentic and human centred design.
This Forum left attendees with some key ideas on how creativity, innovation, risk taking, changing our thinking and working with our community can inspire our workplaces to think differently!

We caught up with one of this year's Emerging Leaders Program participants, Egon Loh, Community Development Officer at Mount Barker District Council to find out how he is enjoying the program so far.
What made you sign up for the Emerging Leaders Program?
I was new in the local government sector (less than a year), and I saw the Emerging Leaders Program as a great opportunity to understand and develop my leadership style, help me understand my strengths and weaknesses, and build valuable connections with fellow peers undertaking the program.
A recent module focused on the ‘Political Context’ – what were some of your takeaways from this module?
I was fascinated by Clinton Jury, Chief Executive Officer, LGA SA presentation about the complexity between the three tiers of government (local, state and federal), and I remembered the exact words Clinton said “the crossover between the three tiers is where the magic happens.”
Alison Hancock, Executive Manager, Mount Barker District Council, also shared about the uniqueness and different working relationships between the administration and the Elected Members, and their separation of roles is quintessential to how local government operates.
|
|
This module enabled me to gain a deeper appreciation of the intricacies of working in local government. What are you most looking forward to as the program progresses?
I am looking forward to the last module of the program (Integration) where I will review the learnings and reflect on my personal growth over the past 5 months in the ELP and I am excited to apply them in my work area.

2023 COMMUNITY MANAGERS NETWORK CONFERENCE
'COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT: GETTING IT RIGHT'
The 2023 LG Professionals SA Community Managers Network
Conference was held on Friday 25 August at UCity Function Centre. More than 100
attendees representing 35 councils and subsidiaries from across South Australia
came together for a carefully curated day of learning and networking.
This year’s theme was ‘Community
Development: Getting it Right'. Speakers from both within and outside the
sector inspired us with fantastic case studies of their work, examples of
successful collaborations with and for the community, and demonstrations of how to work
effectively with those that you serve. A huge thank you to Joshua Stokes,
Shannon Swart and Cathy O’Loughlin for filling in at such short notice!
Becky Hirst was a standout with her exploration of the
concept of community, reflecting on the journey that society has been on in
recent years, while Stephanie Harvey outlined the approach that is needed in
community development and aligning more closely with First Nations’ people’s
ways of knowing, being and doing. Carolyn Curtis shared how SA initiative ‘Our
Town’ looks to support people by building on strengths to create inclusive
cultures of awareness, connection and the promotion of wellbeing. Suhit Anatula
touched on what community intelligence and assets we are connecting with. And
keynote speaker Ally Nitschke rounded out the day, sharing her three pillars to
leading courageously in the modern world – clarity, communication, and change.
Kylie Fergusen from the City of Port Adelaide Enfield did
a fantastic job of weaving the day together as conference emcee, providing
insights and humour for delegates throughout the day.
Thank you to the LG Professionals SA Community Managers
Network Committee for putting together such a fantastic day for their sector
colleagues, and thank you to all who attended, taking important time out of the
office to invest in your development.
