Leaders Connect

A word from the CEO

Welcome to the August edition of Leaders Connect.

Earlier this month we farewelled Morgan Potter, Port Pirie Regional Council from the LG Professionals SA Board - we thank her for her valuable contribution and wish her all the best on her new career journey.

If you have a passion for the sector and supporting the development of local government people, I encourage you to consider submitting a nomination for the Board – information will be sent to all Members in September. However, if you’d like to discuss what’s involved in being a Board Member in the meantime please don’t hesitate to reach out.

August has been an exciting one for LG Professionals SA – we’ve held several Network Meetings, supported the delivery of important state and Australasian sector events and have been working closely with our partners, preparing the launch of all leadership programs for the coming year – keep an eye on your inbox as all our leadership programs will be launching soon.

To those of you interested in broadening your leadership skillset through any of these programs, make sure you register for the Virtual Information Sessions – details will be released in the coming weeks. Often the fear of the unknown may hold us back from pursuing opportunities - join us in these informal sessions and ask any questions you may have. I’m also available to chat through the options for you on an individual level, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Speaking of leadership, we have a range of opportunities open for registrations now including a new short course ‘Speaking with Influence’ so I urge you to read on for further information.

I’m so excited to share that we have 13 teams registered for this year’s Rural Management Challenge, to be held in October. Best wishes to all teams as you commence your preparation – I so look forward to supporting you on this development opportunity.

As always, please feel free to reach out if you would like to discuss your professional development needs – we are here to support you to be the best version of you.

Hopefully see you soon.

Rhiannon

We caught up with one of this year's Emerging Leaders Program participants, Kat McAteer, Operational Excellence Business Partner at City of Onkaparinga to find out how she is enjoying the program so far.

What made you sign up for the Emerging Leaders Program?

Participating in this program has been a long-term goal, I consider myself fortunate to have the opportunity to take part this year. It's the local government focus, collaboration opportunities with future leaders from other councils and exploring my leadership style that appealed to me. What makes this experience even more enriching is the practical, hands-on setting in which it takes place, with the invaluable support of LG Professionals SA and UniSA.

The program allows me to expand my knowledge of leadership concepts and practices, challenge my assumptions, explore innovative ways of thinking, and enhance my self-awareness and confidence. It also provides a networking environment with local government professionals, which facilitates not only real-life and tangible learning outcomes, but also offers a unique opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences.

A recent module focused on ‘A Rural Perspective’ – what were some of your takeaways from this module?

The rural module marked the beginning of our participant-led content, and it was exceptionally well-organised and thought-out. It provided us with a comprehensive view of the 'rural perspective,' emphasising both commonalities and differences compared to metropolitan councils. Reflecting on a full day of great content, I particularly enjoyed the site visit to Summit Sports Park and learning about the Gather Round.

My personal favourite was the panel discussion with Ritu Datta and Nigel Morris, as it provided valuable insights and perspectives, with key takeaways related to the distinct employment opportunities that rural councils can offer and their willingness to explore alternative employment arrangements.

What are you most looking forward to as the program progresses?

I look forward to every module within the program, as well as our weekly project and module team meetings. Each interaction offers a new opportunity for learning, whether through formal lectures or our exchanges with one another. The content is consistently well-suited to local government and is directly applicable to both my professional responsibilities and my personal growth and leadership development.

2023 PEOPLE AND CULTURE NETWORK CONFERENCE
'LEADING THE FUTURE'

On Friday 28 July, 80 people and culture professionals representing 30 councils and subsidiaries from across South Australia gathered at the Adelaide Convention Centre for the 2023 LG Professionals SA People & Culture Network Conference ‘Leading the Future’. The conference presented the opportunity for those in our sector with a responsibility for, or interest in, people and culture to invest in themselves and their development, connect with their colleagues, learn from each other, and gain valuable knowledge from a range of expert speakers.

Annie Harvey opened the day, and questioned what we could say when asked ‘How are you?’, apart from ‘Busy!’ which has become the default response for many. Matt Anderson had us questioning how we can become more innovative in our day-to-day roles, and Samantha Wilkinson provided an insightful presentation on the use of technology in HR. Mark Puncher from Employer Branding Australia reminded delegates that they are doing fantastic work, and it is important to share these great stories far and wide to ensure we are attracting the best talent to the local government sector. We heard an interesting perspective on HR investigations from leading South Australian expert Susan Sadler and a fantastic presentation on effective leadership from Deb Dickson. The day rounded out with an inspiring keynote presentation from Sophia Symeou on how to create the workforces of the future that we need.

Ritu Datta, People & Culture Network Committee member, from City of Mount Gambier acted as the conference emcee for the day and did a fantastic job of weaving the day together, providing insights and humour for delegates all day long. The day wrapped up with informal networking, with delegates sharing their newfound knowledge and inspiration from the day.

Thank you to the LG Professionals SA People & Culture Network Committee for putting together such a fantastic day for their sector colleagues, and thank you to all who attended, taking important time out of the office to invest in your development.
