Leaders Connect

A word from the CEO

What an honour and privilege it is to be able to support professionals on their leadership journeys. There is so much to celebrate in local government and I was thrilled to be able to recognise dedication, hard work, collaboration and innovation with almost 500 of you on Friday 19 May at our 22nd Annual Leadership Excellence Awards Gala Dinner. This event is one of the highlights of my year – where we take the time to celebrate the amazing professionals that make up the South Australian local government sector and the incredible impact that they have on communities across the state.

Congratulations to all winners and finalists, including the 2023 winning Challenge Team – Marion at First Sight from City of Marion, and thank you to our sponsors for your recognition and support. Read on for the full list of winners.

Today, we celebrate the commencement of the 2023 Emerging Leaders Program and welcome the 18th cohort of Emerging Leaders. The program sold out in record time - with 28 registered from a mix of regional and metro councils and subsidiaries from across the state. Thank you so much to the sector for your support of this program, and your investment in our future leaders.

Expressions of Interest for the 2023 Rural Management Challenge are now open! Held every second year, this event, specifically tailored to the regional council context, represents an excellent professional development opportunity. Should you wish to discuss in more detail please don’t hesitate to reach out at any time – I would love to explore how we can support your council to take part.

Happy reading, and best wishes in the rush to the end of the financial year.

Best wishes
Rhiannon

SA MANAGEMENT CHALLENGE REFLECTIONS

The LG Professionals SA Management Challenge was held on Thursday 4 May at Morphettville Racecourse. 17 teams from councils across SA arrived bright and early, throwing themselves into the day and everything it had to offer. The range of tasks certainly put our Challenge teams to the test, as they were forced to respond to a variety of scenarios throughout the day. To their credit, all teams demonstrated great spirit, camaraderie and innovative thinking at every turn.

We were pleased to join teams, mentors and supporters as they came together in the afternoon for well-earned celebratory drinks, and to reflect on their Challenge journey. This was also a valuable networking opportunity for the teams as they shared their experiences and bonded over what they had just been through!

Following the announcement of the Challenge winner at the LG Professionals SA Leadership Excellence Awards Gala Dinner, we look forward to the National Challenge Final in Adelaide in August where SA will be represented by state winners ‘Marion at First Sight’ from the City of Marion. We know they will vow to do SA proud!

Thank you to the volunteers who helped make the Challenge a fantastic day for all involved.

Congratulations to all teams, we look forward to seeing your Council at next year’s Challenge!

2023 RURAL MANAGEMENT CHALLENGE - EXPRESS YOUR INTEREST

We are seeking commitment from regional councils interested in entering a team, prior to confirming the event for this year. If we receive commitment from eight or more councils, the Challenge is on! Please find further details here.

The Rural Management Challenge presents a great opportunity for regional councils to develop their staff through an accessible and cost-effective developmental program. The Challenge is designed to stretch comfort zones and expand skill sets, delivering many benefits to team members. As some tasks or issues may be outside the team members' usual role, it provides the perfect opportunity to broaden their understanding of different areas of the organisation.

REFLECTIONS ON THE PEOPLE AND CULTURE NETWORK FORUM:
EMERGING TRENDS AND INNOVATION

The masses congregated in the City of Churches on Thursday 13 April, with the AFL’s highly successful Adelaide-based ‘Gather Round’ coinciding with the first LG Professionals SA People and Culture Network Forum for the year: Emerging Trends and Innovation. With Network members attending both in person and online, the forum was hosted by City of Adelaide.

Jordon Tomopoulos, Economic Research and Data Analyst from Adelaide Economic Development Agency, delivered an incredibly informative account on Adelaide’s macro-economic conditions, particularly around job-applicant behaviour and how this has been influenced in a post-COVID job market. Of relevance was how we as a sector need to be both responsive, and adaptive to our prospective employees to compete with the private sector.

Sally Niehuus, Manager People and Culture from City of Mitcham, discussed the success of their Graduate Program, undertaken in collaboration with Flinders University. The program clearly reflected that the realisation of a program such as this can only succeed if it’s fully embraced across all levels of the organisation.

Simone Lavelle, Community Engagement Coordinator with the City of Adelaide, shared her experience in moving into Local Government, having previously held careers in both the private and not-for-profit sectors. Simone was able to clearly articulate why many of us work in local government, and the intrinsic rewards that can be achieved through community-based endeavours.

Amy Pearce, Manager People and Culture City of Charles Sturt, provided a window into their recent work in the re-shaping of their Organisational Values, with a core focus on shared accountability and behaviours that predict culture. Following their recent work, an OCI Survey to assess ongoing engagement returned an impressive 86% response rate out of 500 employees.

Clear take-ways from the day were that as an industry sector, through greater collaboration and leveraging our economies of scale more effectively, we can improve stakeholder outcomes and truly position LG as an employer of choice.
