This month we spoke with Cody Stringer, Works & Infrastructure AssistantWudinna District Councilabout her role, what it's like working at a regional council, her experience at the recent LG Professionals SA Women's Network Conference, and how her favourite way to relax is taking out the caravan with her kids.

What is your role and how long have you been in local government?

I have worked at Wudinna District Council for almost three years as the Works & Infrastructure Assistant. During this time, I’ve also had the opportunity to further develop professionally by stepping into the Acting General Manager Works & Infrastructure role when required.

Wudinna District Council is a small organisation, comprising 10 office staff and nine outdoor staff, and we operate as an all-round team - responsible for everything from maintaining parks and gardens to resheeting roads.

Working in a regional council, what’s a part of your role or work that people might not expect?

Working in a regional council comes with its own challenges, especially when the closest major hub is a two-hour drive away. In the works department, one of the hardest parts is getting resources quickly and cost-effectively.

As the Works & Infrastructure Assistant, my job is pretty hands-on and varied. One minute I’m in the office working on budgets, tenders, and reports, and the next I’m out doing daily inspections of the aerodrome, splash pad, CWMS, stormwater systems, and other assets. Larger councils usually have individual teams managing each area, but in regional councils like ours, we really rely on employees being all-rounders. I enjoy this variety, as it allows me to move between office and field work and has provided significant learning opportunities.

You recently joined us at our LG Professionals SA Women’s Network Conference. What was your favourite part of the day?

I honestly had no idea what to expect when I received the Female Field Workforce Scholarship to attend the LG Professionals SA Women’s Network Conference. But as soon as I arrived at Morphettville Racecourse and saw the setup that looked almost like a wedding, I knew it was going to be a great day.

Once the guest speakers started, it was clear how valuable the whole experience would be. I’m really grateful I got the chance to attend, and I don’t think I could pick just one favourite part. The day was full of learning, meeting new people in local government, and getting a better understanding of the sector.

It was also really interesting to see the differences between how metro and regional councils operate. I’d definitely love to go again, hopefully next time with a few more of my Wudinna colleagues.

What’s next for you in your professional development journey?

I’ve been fortunate to access a range of training opportunities during my nearly three years with council, and working in a small, all-rounder organisation has allowed me to gain experience across many areas of local government.

In the new year, I will be commencing a Diploma of Project Management, which I’m really looking forward to. I see this as an important next step in strengthening my skills and contributing even more effectively to council’s projects and community outcomes. I’m also passionate about seeing regional councils gain greater visibility, opportunities, and funding support to reflect the realities of our geographic location.

What do you do with yourself in your spare time?

Outside of work, I’m a busy mum and wife with two boys, Taj (8) and Zay (5). In our spare time, we love getting the caravan out - either to the beach or camping out the back. Mostly, I enjoy spending quality time with my family and friends whenever I can, especially amidst the constant activity of working in local government within a small community.
