This month we spoke with Shannon Barton‑Ancliffe, WHS/Risk Officer, Renmark Paringa Council, about her role, her learnings so far in the Ignite Program, and how quality time with her family is what matters to her most.

What is your role and how long have you been in local government?

My role is WHS/Risk Officer for Renmark Paringa Council, and I have been in local government since January 2023.

You’re currently completing our 2026 Ignite Program – what drew you to the development opportunity?

I was drawn to the Ignite Program because the development opportunities aligned closely with the skills I wanted to strengthen, particularly in leadership, communication, and people management. Topics such as leading difficult conversations, developing diverse workforces, and facilitating high-performing teams stood out to me, as they directly support my goal of becoming a more effective advisor and leader. I saw the program as an opportunity to build capabilities that would allow me to make an even greater contribution to Council and support a positive, safe, and inclusive workplace.

What's the most impactful thing you've learnt from being part of the program so far?

The most impactful thing I've learnt from the program so far is to have confidence in the leadership capabilities I already possess. Before joining the Ignite Program, I didn't always recognise that many of the skills I use every day, such as influencing others, building relationships, communicating effectively, and supporting positive outcomes, are leadership qualities in themselves.

What do you do with yourself in your spare time?

My spare time is all about family. Whether we're heading out bush for the weekend, exploring a new part of Australia, or simply relaxing at home, I value spending quality time with my husband and kids. Those moments together are what matter most to me and help me recharge outside of work.
