We caught up with Rebecca Van Diemen, Team Leader Library Services, Mount Barker District Council, about what led her to participate in the Emerging Leaders Program, her experience in a recent module, and what she's most looking forward to as part of the development opportunity.

What made you sign up for the Emerging Leaders Program (ELP)?

I was nominated by my manager and the People and Culture team for the LG Professionals SA Emerging Leaders Program 2025. I saw it as a valuable opportunity to further develop my leadership skills, challenge myself, and continue my professional growth.

A recent module focused on leading through change – what were some of your takeaways from this module?

I was reminded that change is a constant and that individuals within a team can be at very different points along the change journey. A key takeaway for me was the importance of clearly communicating the purpose behind a change—the “why”—and ensuring people have the right tools and support. Equally important is creating opportunities for team members to contribute and provide feedback throughout the process.

What are you most looking forward to as the program progresses?

I’m looking forward to continuing to build my leadership skills while learning from and networking with other participants. Working collaboratively on projects and modules will strengthen my ability to lead with purpose, deliver results, and foster a motivated, resilient, and future-focused team within my organisation.
