This month we spoke with Jake Fletcher, Customer Service Officer, District Council of Robe, about his experience in the Rural Management Challenge, his role at Robe, and his advice for future rural challengers.

What is your role and how long have you been in local government?

My name is Jake Fletcher, and I have worked at the District Council of Robe since October 2022 as our Customer Service Officer. In a small Council like Robe, my role is varied and always interesting. I assist with matters as diverse as marina reservations, tourist information, and the compilation of the monthly Robe Community Newsletter, as well as handling the occasional stray flock of sheep.

You participated in the Rural Management Challenge this year. Can you share some reflections from this experience?

Wowee – what a rollercoaster ride! The Rural Management Challenge was a fantastic team-building experience and a great way to push myself outside my comfort zone. I was very nervous beforehand, and admittedly at times during the day, but I quickly learnt to throw myself into each challenge. Working with a team of four distinct personality types, we complemented each other’s strengths and achieved a lot in a short time with limited resources and a non-functioning printer. The experience highlighted the value of collaboration, adaptability and backing yourself even when unsure. It was challenging yet rewarding and gave a real boost to every team member’s confidence, both during and after the event.

What would be your advice to others thinking of participating in the Rural Management Challenge?

GO FOR IT! If you’re thinking about it, you’re halfway there - sign up and give it your all. Approach the Challenge with confidence, face your fears and dive into the experience. You’ll be amazed at what can be achieved through the skills you already use every day in local government. Lean on your teammates, share ideas openly and enjoy the boost their support brings. Don’t forget a good sense of humour - create a fun team name and, as a bonus, dress up for extra fun. Go Team Robe Rage!

What’s next for you in your professional development journey?

Opportunities in local government are diverse and wide-ranging. Since joining the District Council of Robe, I’ve completed training and certification in, for example, WHS management, mental health first aid, and construction safety, and I’m always seeking new ways to grow professionally. The variety in my role has exposed me to all areas of Council and helped me identify areas I have a natural interest in, such as development and urban design. This broad experience not only supports my daily work but also provides a solid foundation for guiding my ongoing professional development and career journey.

What do you do with yourself in your spare time?

I’m very fortunate to live in such a naturally beautiful town as Robe. I love walking my two kelpies, C.C. Mad-Dog and Dolly Pawton, either along one of Robe’s beaches, through the tea tree forests in the hills, or on the walking trails around the lakes surrounding town. I spend a lot of my spare time gardening (successfully or not!), researching local history, cheering on the mighty Robe Roosters footy team, and enjoying a candle-lit evening of soft cheese, Wordle and an episode of ‘Murder, She Wrote’. These activities help me unwind, recharge and help keep me grounded within the community.
