Managing Psychosocial Hazards in the Workplace

Karen Lennell
City of Onkaparinga

Jason Mavrikis
SafeWork SA Advisory Service

Like any other physical health and safety risk, psychological health risks from psychosocial hazards must be managed. This session will shed light on the new psychosocial regulations, employers’ responsibilities, and risk control frameworks to assist councils in meeting their duty to protect workers from harm in the workplace.

As the workplace health and safety regulator, SafeWork SA offer advice and education and enforcement for work health and safety (WHS) laws. Jason will highlight the key legislative changes relating to psychosocial safety and discuss the regulator’s approach to supporting workplaces in managing psychosocial hazards and enforcement.

With experience across many industries and working for the Self-insurance regulator RTWSA as an Evaluator, Karen is committed to workplace safety and positive outcomes. She will discuss the application of the new psychosocial code of practice in the Local Government context, focussing specifically on council WHS management systems. She will share insights about what General Managers and Directors should be looking for in their WHS frameworks, including reporting requirements, procedures, staff consultation practices and proactive risk mitigation programs.

Healthy behaviours and mindsets

During this session we will explore practical tips to support you to bounce back from setbacks, manage your energy and promote self-care and wellbeing throughout the organisation by modelling healthy behaviours and mindsets from the “top down”.
