Join us for a morning of inspiring tales as we learn from shared experiences, determined resilience and fostered connections at the LG Professionals SA Community Development Network Forum ‘Beyond the Highlight Reels’.
This Forum will be held in person and via Zoom on Thursday 8 August 2024 from
9:15AM – 12:45PM, at Campbelltown Function Centre, 172 Montacute Road, Rostrevor.
This forum aims to acknowledge the challenges faced by those working in community development and services, while also celebrating the meaningful impact and outcomes that result from their dedication and efforts. You will hear from six speakers who will share their stories of local programs that have driven positive change within their communities through:
- Resilience and sustainability
- Empowerment and participation
- Resource mobilisation
- Trust and collaboration
Whether it be community led initiatives or innovative approaches to managing stretched resources, these stories will provide a platform for further small group discussions which will allow participants to further explore the replicable models and lessons learned.
Come along to hear from…
Gillian Steel, Arts and Cultural Facilitator, City of Port Lincoln
Gilli will share the work she has undertaken as part of the City of Port Lincoln’s partnership with Country Arts SA. Focusing on connections, developing trust and respect as well as listening to what is being said and what isn’t, this partnership has had a significant focus on skill development with local First Nations artists. In just two years, these artists are back practising, developing skills and building confidence with Barngarla stories, language and culture being incorporated into the public realm.
Jackie Hallam, Community Development Officer, City of Tea Tree Gully
Jackie will share the story of how the Tea Tree Gully Community Men’s Shed was formed from community need. She will explain how it was set up and Council’s role in this process as well as the current operational model. Furthermore, Jackie will share the challenges faced throughout, wins along the way and the outcomes achieved through this community led initiative.
Tracy Johnstone, Manager Community Services & Social Development, Campbelltown City Council
Tracy will present ‘Repair – the tale of two community stories’. This is the story of the creation of the community led Campbelltown Repair Café and repairing relationships when community doesn’t agree.
Lorinda Bayley, Community Development Officer, Light Regional Council
Lorinda’s presentation, ‘Be the Lighthouse’, tells of her experience of wearing many hats in a rural council, the importance of networks and the Lighthouse Model of Community Development. She will share how she manages expectations, of herself and others, the importance of reality checks when the cracks appear and learning to see the funny side when things go pear shaped.
Ali Barnes and Tia Russell, Community Projects Officers, District Council of Yankalilla
‘Shifting the lens: How local groups and dynamic adaption created measurable change’ will highlight the community led approach to alcohol and drug risk reduction. Ali and Tia will share how establishing strong relationships, consulting with local sporting groups, schools and Progress Associations and using secured funding from the Alcohol and Drug Foundation has been the key to implementing a number of successful initiatives. Their commitment to continuous evaluation will be evident as you hear how they have engaged with over 200 participants through training, parenting support, and recreational activities, continuing the momentum and community impact.
Holly Cowan, Community Engagement Coordinator, Copper Coast Council
Holly's approach revolves around community-led initiatives, where local voices and grassroots efforts drive sustainable development. Her career underscores a commitment to bridging gaps and fostering genuine connections across diverse landscapes.
‘From Backstage to the World Stage: Illuminating Community-led Initiatives’ will highlight the transformative impact of community-led strategies, demonstrating how behind-the-scenes efforts can elevate communities onto the world stage— or in her case, at Copper Coast Council to a potential World Heritage listing.
