Leaders Connect

A word from the CEO

Happy end of June!

Over the past year we are thrilled to have supported local government professionals from 72 South Australian Councils and Subsidiaries who signed up for Organisation memberships with LG Professionals SA – thank you to each and every one of you for your commitment to developing your staff and providing them with a fundamental partner in their whole of career journey.

Our membership base is currently comprised of 2,776 professionals from a range of job levels across the South Australian local government sector and as we busily plan and program for another huge year in 2023/2024, we invite you to reach out with any ideas for events, themes, topics to ensure we are meeting your needs.

As your association we are here to support you – please take the time to ensure your Member details are up to date so that we can keep you informed of relevant opportunities.

As we rush towards the end of the financial year, if you have remaining professional development budget I encourage you to register for one (or more!) of the many upcoming development opportunities available through LG Professionals SA, or consider pre-purchasing investment in your staff for the coming year.

Not only are registrations for our 2023 People and Culture Network Conference open, but registrations have just launched for the 2023 Rural Management Challenge, and two exclusive masterclasses with International Facilitator Dr Barry Bales.

Finally, a reminder that we recently re-launched our Business Performance and Improvement Network –
I encourage you to get involved! Read more in the Networks section below.

Wishing you all time to reset, rest and reflect as we sprint into, and through July.

Keep warm and well!

Best wishes
Rhiannon

Damian Carter

This month we spoke with Damian Carter, Chief Executive Officer at District Council of Streaky Bay, about his role, the Business Performance and Improvement Network and an exciting project council is working on.

As Chief Executive Officer of District Council of Streaky Bay, what does a typical day look like for you?

I get in the car and drive two minutes to our office where I have numerous carparks at my disposal to park in (honestly why would you live in Adelaide). Then throughout my day, I complete a number of tasks based around the themes of:

  • Strategic Planning and Decision-Making
  • Meetings with Senior Management
  • Stakeholder Engagement

We caught up with one of this year's Emerging Leaders Program participants, Jade Falco, Service Excellence Coordinator at EastWaste to find out how she is enjoying the program so far.

What made you sign up for the Emerging Leaders Program?

I have been wanting to sign up for the Emerging Leaders Program for several years and was so happy when the opportunity presented to participate. What interested me about the program is that it is an in-person course, providing an opportunity to meet and work with other Local Government professionals. Also, the Prospectus indicated that there is a great balance of personal development type work i.e. exploring personal behaviours mixed with practical development type work i.e. learning about change management and improving workplace culture.

What was your biggest takeaway from the opening retreat?

I had a mix of excitement and nervousness going into the opening retreat and my biggest takeaway was the confidence boost that it gave me. It showed me that I can do hard things and that the more I push myself out of my comfort zone, the more I can achieve and grow. I also really enjoyed the sessions delivered by UniSA, particularly the topics on the second day regarding leadership, beliefs and values.

What are you most looking forward to as the program progresses?

I am really excited about working with my team to deliver an amazing module about Local Government Sustainability. I am also looking forward to expanding my knowledge, growing as an individual, and increasing my self-confidence throughout the program.
