Leaders Connect

A word from the CEO

Welcome to this month’s edition of Leaders Connect.

July has been a big one already, and I have valued the many opportunities to connect with our members, at our General Managers and Directors Network Forum, Emerging Leaders Program modules, Network Committee meetings, and more.

July brings with it the start of a new financial year and, for many of us, new plans and goals. LG Professionals SA are here to support your progress towards these goals and have been working hard to coordinate a range of professional development opportunities – several aren’t too far away so don’t miss out on registering!

Registrations close this week for the 2023 Rural Management Challenge – a highlight of the events calendar for me, I look forward to supporting teams as they step out of their comfort zones and experience the incredible learning that comes from participation.

The first intake of the LG Professionals SA Women’s Career Navigator Program is nearly at capacity, and registrations must close soon for the upcoming Business Performance and Improvement Network Forum – I’m excited to hear from Katrina and Damian as they explore the theme of ‘Thinking Differently’ and hope to see you there.

We are excited to have secured Dr Barry Bales, Director of Uncharted Leadership in the USA to facilitate two in-person masterclasses in August – Emotional Intelligence and Systems Thinking. Numbers are strictly limited so I encourage you to register as soon as possible.

Wishing you all the best - I look forward to seeing you soon.

Program launched - register today!

The LG Professionals SA Community Managers Network is open to those leading in the field of community development or community services in local government. The network aims to lead local government in responding to the changing nature of communities, community services and community development.

The Network hold a conference bi-annually, and this year’s carefully curated theme is ‘Community Development: Getting it Right’. Speakers from both within and outside the sector will inspire us with fantastic case studies of their work, examples of successful collaborations with and for the community, and best practice frameworks. We will also ask some provocative questions to encourage outside the box thinking by local government community professionals about how best to innovate and collaborate to achieve ongoing positive community outcomes.

We caught up with one of this year's Emerging Leaders Program participants, Simon Bartosak, Team Leader Civil Maintenance at City of Salisbury to find out how he is enjoying the program so far.

What made you sign up for the Emerging Leaders Program?

I have been working at City of Salisbury for the last 5 years as Team Leader Civil Maintenance and I have been looking to broaden my local government networks, undertake further professional development in leadership and work towards obtaining formal Business qualifications. After reviewing the content delivered in the Emerging Leaders Program, delivered in partnership by
LG Professionals SA and The University of South Australia this seemed like a good fit for me and great way to commence the journey towards becoming a more effective leader.

The most recent UniSA module focused on Culture - what was your biggest take away from this session?

In the module on Culture and Team Dynamics I developed a greater awareness of organisational culture and how I can better influence team culture and team dynamics. I’m looking forward to taking this knowledge back to City of Salisbury and trialling some of these new concepts within the team I currently lead.

What are you most looking forward to as the program progresses?

I'm looking forward to continuing to build relationships with the ELP cohort, expand local government networks and continue to grow and develop my leadership brand.
